When the Candle Watched Me Pray

The candle burns at faithful tapered end

A flame I cannot touch but is a friend

To every breath of hope that will ascend

If I abide in Him who calls me friend

Her light bears me a witness to the truth

That God is light and love and will forsooth

Lead me into that light from lonely booth

Of solitary groanings ‘neath my roof

It penetrates the darkness with a glow

To cheer me joy is closer than I know

And winks a flicker at me now to show

My flame into a bonfire will grow
